Why is Molybdenum Wire Used in Wire EDM?

The widespread use of molybdenum wire as the electrode wire in wire EDM (usually referring to fast-flash wire EDM) is based on a series of excellent properties of the material itself, which perfectly match the requirements of the wire EDM process.

1. Excellent Comprehensive Mechanical Properties

High Strength and High Toughness: Molybdenum is a refractory metal with an extremely high melting point (approximately 2620℃), which allows the molybdenum wire to maintain high tensile strength during processing. The high-speed electrode wire (linear speed can reach 8-12 m/s) needs to withstand enormous tension to prevent wire breakage and reduce vibration, ensuring processing accuracy and stability. At the same time, it also possesses a certain degree of toughness, allowing it to withstand repeated bending on the guide rollers.

Good Rigidity: Molybdenum wire has good rigidity and is not easily bent or deformed under tension. This is crucial for maintaining a constant discharge gap between the electrode wire and the workpiece, a prerequisite for obtaining high-precision dimensions and good surface quality.

2. Excellent Electrical Properties

Good Conductivity: As an electrode wire, excellent conductivity is a fundamental condition for achieving stable electrical discharge machining. Although molybdenum’s conductivity is not as high as copper’s, it fully meets the requirements of electrical discharge machining.

High Electron Work Function: At the moment of discharge, the surface of the molybdenum wire can withstand extremely high current density and high temperature, with relatively low electrode wear. This means that during the cutting process, the molybdenum wire itself wears out slowly, maintaining dimensional stability for a longer period, thereby extending its service life and ensuring machining accuracy.

3. Unique Thermal Properties

Extremely High Melting Point: This is one of the most critical advantages. Wire EDM is essentially electrical discharge, with local temperatures reaching over 10,000℃. Molybdenum’s ultra-high melting point ensures that it will not easily melt or excessively ablate at the moment of discharge, guaranteeing the continuity and stability of machining.

4. Machinability and Economy

Easy to Draw into Fine Wires: Molybdenum material can be drawn into very fine and dimensionally precise wires through plastic processing. Commonly used molybdenum wire for wire EDM has a diameter between 0.10mm and 0.20mm, which can meet the machining needs of complex and precision parts.

High cost-effectiveness: Compared to other refractory metals such as tungsten wire (harder but more brittle and more expensive), molybdenum wire achieves the best balance between strength, toughness, lifespan, and cost. For high-volume fast wire EDM, molybdenum wire is an economical and practical choice.

Processing environment: Slow wire EDM operates in deionized water working fluid, which does not require high corrosion resistance from the electrode wire; while fast wire EDM often uses emulsions, in which molybdenum wire exhibits stability.
